Nailing Brexit jelly to a wall

The whole question of Brexit has felt like nailing jelly to a wall – to quote another horrible corporate expression.  I have pondered this for many years then suddenly, I got it –

I BLOODY GOT IT

I can remember when we joined the Common Market and the progression through the numerous Treaties that have forged the EU of today that we all hate.  Do we?  I certainly felt that and formed the opinion we should leave.  I have been to the European Parliament in Brussels but I couldn’t say whether I was impressed or disgusted – it was too big a concept to take in.  However, I began to realise it was actually Marmite and I was one of the haters.

When we were given a referendum on remaining or leaving the EU I did not think for a minute that the vote would be to leave.  I don’t think many did. I am sure Nigel Farage didn’t expect the result.  But there was one other person who certainly didn’t expect it – DAVID CAMERON.

But first, before I explain what I now get, let us be clear.  A very large percentage of those people who voted to leave will not be alive when we eventually do.  An even larger number of people who did not vote to leave – AND I DON’T MEAN THE REMAINERS – I mean those people who were not able to vote because they were too young, and some of them are still being born or yet to be conceived will be alive when we leave and they will have to live their lives with the consequences of the actions of 25% of the population of the UK; yes, 1 person in 4 of the UK population who voted to leave.  By the time we actually leave that number will be about 1 in 5 or an even smaller percentage.

But, please, don’t give me the bullshit democracy argument.  It is utter bullshit.  If we had a democratic vote taken between 1000 people and asked whether Einstein was correct with his theory of relativity and 60% said he was wrong – that would be a democratically decided decision – it would also be a bullshit decision – and if anyone can’t understand why, go back to your Daily Mail.

So, here is my big reveal.

Listening to Question Time last night, 7 June 2018 something dawned on me – a penny dropped.  If I spoke to someone and asked them how they voted  in the EU referendum and they agreed to engage in my questions.  Regardless of whether they voted IN or OUT it makes no difference to my conclusion.  I can ask them, WHAT, WHEN, HOW, WHERE did they vote and they will tell me.  But then the rabbit comes out of the hat and I ask them WHY.

So, so, now we get started.  Why did you vote the way you voted?  How many searching questions do you imagine I need to ask before I discover that they voted based on what they were told in a paper, probably a rag, something on line, some bullshit they were told by someone, a misconception, a belief, an urban myth, a piece of mis-information, a piece of propaganda and piece of devious political mischief.  A BLOODY GUESS. A RANDOM PICK.  Whether it takes 1 question of 10 questions the answer will eventually be the same:

  1.  THEY ACTUALLY DID NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT THEY WERE VOTING FOR – IT WAS NOT QUALITY, INFORMED, RESEARCHED, REASONED, ACCURATE OR TRUTHFUL INFORMATION.  IT WAS POKE AND HOPE.
  2. THIS WAS JUST ONE PERSON.  WHAT IF YOU WERE TO SUBJECT EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO VOTED, HOW MANY BASED THEIR DECISION ON QUALITY, ACCURATE, RESEARCHED, INFORMED, VALIDATED INFORMATION?

The answer to question 2 will not take a calculator, the back of a fag packet will do.

So this is a very simple conclusion:

Don’t think about HOW people voted, think about WHY people voted.  Now, when you have thought about that you will no doubt come to the same conclusion that I did –

NOBODY HAD A CLUE WHAT THEY WERE VOTING FOR AND THEY DECIDED THE FATED OF A NATION FOR ALL THE GENERATIONS TO COME ON THAT BASIS!

Now, if there was ever an example of bullshit, that has to be it, scary bullshit.

Going forward, if the UK continues on it’s present course and leave the EU, the Customs Union, the Single Market and God knows what will happen in Ireland then our fate is sealed … or it it.

Unlike Ireland and Wales, but perhaps not Ireland! Scotland has a unique opportunity to do something about this.  In 2014 we came very, very close to leaving the UK.  Given the catastrophe that may be looming it is becoming ever more likely with every passing day that Scotland will fly passed the point where we will exit the UK and it is my hope that as many of our English neighbours join us going forward.  One thing is for sure, we have plenty of room and a warm welcome.
