The eyes and ears of democracy

Conspiracy theory or awakening – you decide.

During the referendum we were out every day knocking on doors, meeting people in the streets attending public meetings and linking up with other branches who were doing the same.

By the 17 September we were very confident of a win but more than that, we were confident of a very substantial win.  we were in a good place to judge, the doorsteps.

On the 19 September the nation was in shock.  Shock because we really felt we had it comfortably.  I was shocked, yes, but also in disbelief.  I have held that thought and I hold it today.

In the aftermath of a monumentous SNP Conference 2015 it is clear from all the media that the main parties are in panic and denial.  But we have been there before?  They talk of a massive rise in the SNP.  They talk of an SNP that will disrupt Parliament then burn it to the ground??

But is there such a massive rise in the support for the SNP?  The answer based on membership is clearly YES.  But it is not that simple.  If I said, is there a massive rise in the YES campaign we may get a different answer – the most likely truth is a massive galvanising of support for the campaign.

So here’s the thing.  Ahead of the referendum and for very obvious political and financial reasons the establishment were never going so let their cash cow go; they would need a fix.  The postal vote is ‘toffee from a wean’.  The ballot on the day, probably a bit more challenging but nothing the establishment hadn’t been practicing for hundreds of years.  After all, they only needed a swing of 4 to 5% to secure their victory.

Let’s assume that was the case.  They turn up with their tools, do the deed and skulk back into the shadows as if they had never been there.  The don’t hang around and there is no trace of them after 19 Sep.

The Union and their band of supporters simple laugh and walk away.  The matter is closed.

However, when people are cheated, or feel they are cheated that rarely walk away, they rarely are silenced or quiet.  They consider what action to take to give them some kind of comfort.  The most obvious action from the vast army of YES supporters has been to a) join the SNP party and/or b) determine they will vote with the SNP on 7 May 15.

So, have we seen any evidence of this.  Has anybody failed to see all the evidence of this.

Perhaps this is not a massive swing to the SNP.  Perhaps this is a REVEAL by the people of Scotland who believed they were the MAJORITY

BEGINNING TO SEE THEY ALWAYS WERE

But, beware, if they can fix it once, they can fix it again.  And don’t be fooled into thinking that they are not still united in the Union – of course they are – the clue is in the name – the UNITED kingdom.

Now more than ever we must be vigilant.  We are seeing in Scotland the kind of political intrigue we thought was confined to the spy novel or the Cold War.  It is on these shores, it is all around us and it is all amongst us.

WE MUST BE THE EYES AND EARS OF DEMOCRACY
